FAQ

What is Seresto?

Seresto is an innovative collar that protects your dog from ticks and fleas for eight months.

This means that you don’t have to worry about more frequent applications of flea and tick treatments, and there is no risk of forgetting to do so.

What makes Seresto different from other flea and tick collars?

Innovative technology enables the collar to release low, safe doses of its active ingredients over long periods of time.

These are transferred to your dog’s skin and fur, and spread across their entire body to keep them protected from ticks and fleas for eight months.

What are the active ingredients in Seresto?

There are two: imidacloprid, which kills adult fleas and flea larvae; and flumethrin, which repels and kills all life stages of ticks. Both ingredients act on contact without the need to bite.

Why am I still seeing a flea on my dog when she’s wearing a Seresto collar?

Fleas may still jump onto your dog when they go past them, even if they’re wearing a Seresto collar. The active ingredients work on contact, which means the fleas need to grab onto the fur to get exposed to the active ingredient. However, once they have jumped on, the fleas will become disorientated before dying and falling off. You may therefore sometimes also see fleas moving slowly in your dog’s fur.

My pet has started chewing the collar, should I be worried?

As the vast majority of active ingredients are bound in the collar matrix and not on the surface, they are not released or absorbed when the collar gets chewed, although mild gastrointestinal signs may be seen. Nevertheless, you should avoid chewing, and if your dog manages to get their own collar into their mouth it’s likely that it is applied too loosely. Ideally fit snuggly with just two fingers between the collar and your dogs’s neck.

Is Seresto safe for kittens?

It’s safe for use on kittens aged 10 weeks and older. Should I leave a gap between taking off an old collar and putting on a new one? No. It’s important to put it on without any delay to assure a continuous protection of your dog. My Seresto collar doesn’t smell at all. Does this mean it’s not working properly? Not at all. Seresto is odorless, which means you don’t have to put up with any of the unpleasant smells you usually associate with older flea and tick collars. Once applied, the active ingredients in Seresto are quickly distributed throughout the entire body surface to protect your pet.

Can the Seresto collar be used alongside normal collars?

Absolutely. Seresto can be worn alongside your dog’s usual collar without losing efficacy, as long as the Seresto collar is in contact with hair and skin.

My dog is scratching at the collar, causing redness and irritation. What should I do?

If your dog isn’t used to wearing a collar, there is a chance that they might develop mild reactions such as scratching, redness and hair loss. These symptoms usually disappear within one to two weeks, without removing the collar, as your dog gets used to wearing it. In some cases, temporary collar removal may be recommended until the symptoms have disappeared. In rare cases in dogs, application site reactions such as dermatitis, inflammation, eczema or lesions may occur and in these instances, collar removal is recommended. Please consult your vet if the symptoms persist or become more severe.

What should I do if the collar gets dirty?

Will a muddy collar still keep my dog protected from fleas and ticks?

We are not aware of mud having an impact on the release of the active ingredients in Seresto and hence its efficacy.

Is Seresto dog collar water-resistant? Do I need to remove the collar if my dog gets wet?

Seresto does not need to be removed when a dog gets wet or is bathed. The active ingredients are contained in the collar matrix and will not be released into water. They spread through the lipid layer of the dog’s skin and hair and even if this lipid layer is partially washed off by bathing, Seresto will quickly replenish the active ingredients and the pet will be protected again. However, prolonged and repeated exposure to water or extensive shampooing should be avoided as the duration of activity may be reduced.

What happens if my dog gets their collar stuck on something?

Seresto is designed with a double safety-release mechanism. In the unlikely event of your dog being trapped, the collar will widen when they give it a hard pull, allowing for a quick release. The collar is also equipped with a predetermined breaking point, so a harder pull will break it.

How often should I check the fit of the Seresto collar on a growing kitten?

Kittens grow at different rates and we recommend frequent checks of the collar and readjustment if necessary.

How should I dispose of a Seresto dog collar?

Used collars or any remnants should be wrapped in paper and placed in garbage. The product should not enter water courses.
